Frequently Asked Questions

Where will I be living?

In Nelson, New Zealand. A town of 50,000 people on the northern tip of the South Island. It's known for it's sunshine and National Parks. It's a very safe, easy to navigate town with a large arts and crafts market and strong tourism.

Who will I be living with?

You and your team will be finding a room to rent in one of the many large homes in Nelson's downtown area that cater to young adult travelers, You will share a room with other, same gender student from the Missions Immersion experience.

Where will I work?

You will find at least a part time job in the community of Nelson with assistance from The Harkins. The purpose of working is both to support yourself financially, but also to build relationships and catalyze ministry within the community.

What will a normal week look like?

A normal week will consist of personal rhythms of daily time with Jesus, exercise, work, and study. It will also consist of community rhythms of gathering with the Missions Immersion team for worship, prayer, teaching, and outreach. You will also meet weekly with a mentor. You will have a designated Sabbath each week for rest and play.

Who is overseeing this?

Kevin and Jessica Harkins are the overseeing directors, but they have asked both Foursquare Missions (FMI) and The Rock Network to provide oversight, accountability, and counsel to ensure the safety and well being for all involved.

What are the pre-deployment meetings?

Starting the first week of February, The Harkins will be meeting weekly on zoom with all accepted participants. This will be a time of training, encouragement, connection, and prayer to prepare you for your July deployment to New Zealand.

What ministry will we be involved in?

Your ministry involvement will include building relationships and disciple making within the community, assisting the Harkins with the launch of house churches in Nelson and their work with Foursquare in the South Pacific. They will collaborate with you to find what roles best fit your gifting and passions.

How many participants will there be?

We plan to accept between 8 young adults.

What about transportation?

Nelson is small enough that you can manage mostly on foot and bicycle. We are recommending everyone purchase a bike upon arrival. The Harkins will have a van to transport everyone on longer trips.

Key Scripture:

Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
